Bug Description

Binary package hint: kde4

When using recent FGLRX with AIGLX, KDE4 shows bizarre distortion, as shown in the attached screenshot. Mousing over buttons causes them to jump around; when I go to click on a button, I find that another button's image is superimposed over it, so it looks like I'm clicking the wrong one (though I'm not).

FGLRX+AIGLX works fine with KDE3 + Compiz, and KDE4 works with the 2D RadeonHD driver.

I still have this problem with the new Catalyst 8.01 drivers.

Oh, and the problem is there whether or not AIGLX is enabled in xorg.conf.

The issue goes away when KDE's desktop effects are disabled.

Using the Free ATI drivers (radeon) I have no problems. Is there anyone else using a similar configuration and experiencing these same issues? I do know there are driver issues though because of the way that KDE works with compositing is slightly different than the way that Compiz does. KDE took the road of doing compositing the way they did in order to get the X developers to fix the issues on their end, which we hope they do eventually. I am not sure if this is the problem you are seeing or not but I will continue to keep an eye on this report and check out the KDE Bugzilla as well. Thanks!

By the way: the distortion disappears when I switch to "Texture: Indirect" or something like that (don't remember what exactly it said; I've gone back to KDE3 for awhile).

Yeah, this is definitely a fglrx driver issue.

I've posted a new version of the -fglrx driver to our xorg-edgers PPA,
would you mind testing it either on Jaunty or Karmic and see if it
resolves this bug?

Get fglrx 8.620 here:

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.
