Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read "How to report bugs effectively" [WWW] http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.
What action are you trying to perform that requires a system restart?
If you were trying to update the software in Ubuntu that sometimes requires a restart, but a LiveCD is not meant to be used in that way. A LiveCD is for testing an operating system, system recovery, and temporary use. It is not intended for long term use.
I know what a liveCD is for, however
- what if you don't know you're running a liveCD (the sysadmin might have put it in, you're a noob), or you just forgot, then a restart can throw away some important data (docs on the desktop for example)
if (running liveCD) warning("something based on sentence above"); else ("system restart required");
would already be a very useful improvement
Or actually a warning when saving stuff in a place that would 'normally' survive a restart is a better strategy.
And about it being for temporary use:
- Some people carry liveCDs with them to override the OS of machines that are not their own
- The installer of the liveCD crashes on partitioning, which is why i have been using the liveCD longer than i would have liked
Please answer my question of what exact operation you were trying to perform that required prompted the message "system restart required"
Also, I believe the bug you just reported (bug 183448) is just a repeat of this one. The reason they are the same bug is because the cause is the same; there is no warning that any changes made during a livecd session are not saved.
Also, if the 3 suggestions (in the last comment) of bug 137492 were made, would that "fix" this bug?
i tried to install non-free drivers for my video card, which i understand need a restart
about bug 183448, it's not exactly the same, but if that is fixed, this one's fixed enough for me too (i now understand bugs don't disappear, if i press reported bugs i get my bugs including those that were labeled somekind of closed by someone else)
The suggestions for bug 137492 seem sufficient enough to fix this one too
"Live session user" doesn't cut it. Easy to overlook or misinterpret.
