Bug Description

After upgrading to hardy heron from gutsy both Firefox 2.0 and Thunderbird 2.0 would not connect to SSL pages. Uninstalling, removing profiles, and shared directories did NOT fix the problem. Problem does not exist in Firefox 3.0 or Swiftweasel and Swiftdove (which I am now using).

Seems to have fixed itself through the update process.

I just upgraded to Hardy (as of 2008-04-21 HKT) from Gutsy and got exactly the same problem. Reinstalling package firefox-3/thunderbird doesn't help. The error message was:

"Could not initialize the browser's security component. The most likely cause is problems with files in your browser's profile directory. Please check that this directory has no read/write restrictions and your hard disk is not full or close to full. It is recommended that you exit the browser and fix the problem. If you continue to use this session, you might see incorrect browser behaviour when accessing security features."

I tried with a newly created user with nothing in the home directory and the problem's still there. I then installed firefox-2 and got exactly the same error message when I tried to start firefox-2. Here's the version information of the related packages:

ivanwong@ivanwong:~$ dpkg -l | grep 'firefox\|thunderbird\|libnspr\|libnss'

Is this symptom still reproducible in 8.10 or 9.04?

I just upgraded to 8.10 and the symptom was still reproducible. However, in my case, the problem was (likely) due to an old version of libsqlite3.so.0 that was hanging around in /usr/local/lib (which also caused a problem with Firefox when I upgraded). Deleting the old version of libsqlite3.so.0 seemed to fix both problems for me.d
