Bug Description

Ubuntu 19.04 Gnome

Screen lock is set to off in Settings->Privacy. Blank Screen is set to 10 minutes in Settings->Power. On returning from Screen Blank, Lock Screen is present. Does not occur after manual suspend (ie closing laptop lid) and resuming.

In dconf I have set org/gnome/desktop/lockdown/disable-lock-screen to true.
org/gnome/desktop/screensaver/lock-enabled is set to false
org/gnome/desktop/screensaver/ubuntu-lock-on-suspend is set to false

This sounds like a bug I have heard reported elsewhere, but can't find the other reports right now.

Also tried editing /etc/default/acpi-support and commenting out the line LOCK_SCREEN=true. That did not work.

Just found a workaround that seems to take care of the problem. Install the Gnome Extension: Disable Screen Shield and activate it. The lock screen no longer appears after screen blanking.

My mistake, it is still present. I just wasn't waiting long enough after the screen blank before waking the screen up. Waited a bit and it is back, even with the extension running.

What do you call "lock screen"? Do you have to enter your password or do you only mean the "banner" screen?

Sorry, but I am not sure I could tell the difference so I will try and describe it as best I can.

There is no place to enter a password, but I also have my system set to automatically log in, so I'm not sure if it would ask me for a password if it was displayed. I do have to press a key to get past the screen.

I have attached a picture of the screen. I was not able to do a screen capture as it would not let me with the screen displayed, so I used my phone's camera. I will also attached a screen capture showing my settings for choice of background and lock screen in the next comment as I can only attach one file per comment. Hopefully this will clarify things.

Correction: I have to push the Enter key to dismiss the screen, not any other key.

Thanks for the details, the screen is not locked in your case.
That has been reported upstream as https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/issues/681
You might want to comment on the gitlab to explain why you find it disturbing

I am redirected here from gnome-shell/+bug/1834817

Reason for importance: the system is my main media server. Movies black out at random times (15-30 minutes) requiring keyboard unlocking of the screen using ctrl+alt+Enter.

Playing movies should prevent the screen from blanking. If it doesn't then please log a bug against the video player you are using. If you are using Wayland sessions then it is mutter bug 1740771.

This is a clean system - nothing but default packages. Streaming video in Firefox.
Happy to run commands to provide you what you need to know.

I do not know if I am using 'Wayland sessions' or not. bug 1740771 refers to 'screensaver' - I have not activated one and cannot locate settings for one on my system.

If I search for screensaver in Applications (Dock>Show applications) I see a few options avail that would require installation only.

I have toggled the Power settings again - will advise if this prevents blanking.

1. Settings>Power>Blank Screen was OFF, but switched this back ON then OFF again
2. The randomness of the blanking period between 15-30 min suggested issue was with ScreenLock
3. ScreenLock (per this bug) is tied to screen blanking
4. GitHub upstream considering 3 options on screen blanking like Android (nothing, lock, hibernate)
5. Screen Lock in my case was a symptom of what appears to be a glitch in screen blanking
6. Toggling screen blanking ON/Off resolved my issue

The randomness in the times of the screen blanking while an issue, is no longer an issue I have as the system now is set to OFF - and so far has remained off.

Thanks for your help vanvugt

Meanwhile, maybe reworked patch from that MR can be included in Ubuntu?
