Bug Description

Binary package hint: initramfs-tools

My Hardy development environment is run in QEMU. After updating the image about a week ago, I booted it today to discover filesystem errors---no big deal. The problem is that the initrd image scripts that handle tainted filesystems require external dependencies from outside of the initrd. This causes the initrd to not ask the user for root password for maintenance mode; in fact, it appears to abort due to this.

I noted this with 2.6.24-2 and 2.6.24-3 kernels.

Attached are three screenshots.

Is this symptom still reproducible in 8.10 or 9.04?
