Bug Description

I am unable to start the upgrade process from 14.04 to 16.04.

"An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade.

This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu

If none of this applies, then please report this bug using the
command 'ubuntu-bug ubuntu-release-upgrader-core' in a terminal."

I have never used a pre-release of Ubuntu but I may have installed packages not provided by Ubuntu. I've got some PPAs activated, mainly to get a more recent version of Ardour and Jack.

How can I resolve this problem and upgrade to the next release? Is there a way around installing from scratch?

Thanks for looking into this issue, Brian.

I installed ubuntu-desktop and retried upgrading to 16.04. It didn't work. The error message is the same. Any other ideas?

According to VarLogDistupgradeAptlog.txt You have installed vlc from ppa. Could you uninstall it with ppa-purge?

Please add the log file /var/log/dist-upgrade/main.log and
/var/log/dist-upgrade/apt.log or just open a new bug report using
'ubuntu-bug ubuntu-release-upgrader' as that will have all the log file
regarding the upgrade and let me know the new bug number.
