Bug Description

It would be a very interesting for distro developers to have a widget allowing to add/customize a distribution logo to the greeter.

For reference this feature exists in GDM, placed at the bottom of the screen.

This feature already exists (at least if I understand your request correctly.
We called it "badges" and they are what identifies the session in the session menu in the top panel - in case the user has multiple sessions available, just create a pull request adding your logo here:
https://git.launchpad.net/lightdm-gtk-greeter/tree/data/badges

Obviously that's visually different from just having a "watermark" logo somewhere in the screen, but then again I'm not sure that's a very essential feature...

Watermark, while not essential, is nice to have, vendors will appreciate their brand being put there and users will be able to change it to their own preference, or just not show it at all. The value is in visibility, that's something that cannot be achieved with wallpapers considering the resizing and cutting off parts of it to retain the aspect ratio.

Yes I meant a watermark and what as hellcp already said, it is a nice customization option for distributions / vendors using for example the Xfce desktop to add their own logo to the welcome screen. Vendors providing devices with Linux preinstalled could potentially also add their own flair to it.
