Bug Description

Miro crashes predictably.
Steps:
- open Miro.
- play a video (i have only youtube videos)
- click on the left menu to choose a category menu before the video ends.
- click on another video (miro will freeze right after the click)

I tried an alternative package (Miro 1.1-1) from ftp.usuols.org with no success.

Thank you for your bug report, and for trying to help make Ubuntu better. However, this report doesn't contain enough information to pin-point your problem. Could you please add the following information:
1) The version of Ubuntu you are using
2) The version of the Miro package you have installed (the output of "apt-cache policy miro" is good for this)
3) The output of running miro from a console.

Additionally, if you have a crash report from miro in /var/crash, attaching that would be extremely helpful.

The program 'totem' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'.
  (Details: serial 75 error_code 11 request_code 141 minor_code 19)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

Anyway a program should not crash beacuse a corrupt file.

I will continue testing and post any novelty

The problem lies in the xine renderer, somehow.
I found a quick workaround (I am on 1.1-1, but guess it could work with ubuntu standard version )
The video quality seems worst (imho).

- At command line type: gconf-editor
- find and select /apps/miro
- right click in the right pane and add a new key.
- key name: renderers
- type: list
- list type: string
- add a single value: gstrenderer

Now launch and enjoy Miro withotu crashes !

Could you check whether other media players (preferably using the xine backend - options are xineui, totem-xine, etc) can play the file that Miro is dying on? Also, could you check whether the Gutsy Miro has the same problem? Miro 1.1-1 is not an official Ubuntu package, and so we can't do anything to fix it.

TAC one (tacone) wrote :

Yes, I switched to 1.1-1 because Gutsy Miro was having the very same problem.
(see the first comment from Cesar Arguinzones on this bug for the output of Gutsy Miro)

I am playing youtube videos (flv). Totem-xine plays them with no problem.

Let's make it more clear:
   - miro crash happen every time one follows the steps to reproduce I gave in the bug description.
   - miro *doesn't* crash if you skip to the next video and next and next again, until you get back to the main menu. playing another video won't crash it now.

Seems like:
   - xine is not properly removed from memory / deinitializated / nuked / (add you own) when you stop it in the middle of a video. The next video will crash.

I really don't know if the bug lies in miro's xinerenderer or it's a problem from xine that other application workaround in someway.
My workaround was to avoid using xinerenderer (using gconf-editor, see my comment above).

- Ubuntu gutsy updated (kernel 2.6.22-14-generic)
- miro:

  Candidate: 1.1.1-2

Your fix with gconf-editor works well ! Thanks ! (quality became very bad, is there a mplayer renderer ?)

I remember having a BadAlloc with version 0.9.8.
But with 1,1 it became :
DTV: unexpected error while parsing html data.
...whatever order I would try to play my video, it always happens for the second one.

Looking (very briefly) at the source seems like there are only xine renderer and gstreamer renderer.
I heard they use vlc on windows and wonder why they don't offer it on linux.
If they don't solve this bug the very next release, a gui option to switch back and forth beetwen gstreamer and xine without messing with gConf would be appreciated.

Guess if they read launchpad reports or not.

You might also wish to check the --xine-driver option (which works in the official Ubuntu version).

@Cesar Arguinzones:
It seems you probably have a driver bug in your Xv support - are you by any chance using the intel drivers with Compiz? That's a known incompatible combination, but there are undoubtedly others (fglrx seems to have crazy Xv problems sometimes, for example).

@TAC One:
This is still marked as incomplete because I haven't seen anyone try with Hardy's current Miro (1.0-1ubuntu2, as of this writing). Hardy's miro has some patches to it's xine renderer implementation, so it'd be good to test that.
Additionally, I can't reproduce this on my system (x86_64, nouveau or nvidia drivers)

Well after making a clean install Miro doesn't crash when playing the video, it's a ogg file.
But now I have problem playing mp4 files. There is not crash, it just start and end the video almost inmediatlly (Just flashing).
I save the videos and can see it's, without a problem in Totem and Xine.

Should a new bug be opened?

UPDATE:

Well I just disable the visual effects and Miro plays the video just fine, then just for testing i enabled the visual effects and Oh My GOD! miro keeps playing the videos just fine????

About Xv support? I'am pretty new to Ubuntu. I think that is my case, but I'm not sure. Is there an alternative?

Thanks!

You should be reporting your problems to «http://bugzilla.pculture.org/», where they can actually do something about it.

Um, installing software from outside the official Ubuntu repositories
isn't really the best first advice to give.

Miro crashing like that suggests that it's a Xine bug. It should be
easy enough to test whether other applications can play the video, or to
check whether switching to the GStreamer backend
(Miro->Video->Options->Playback->Use "gstreamer" renderer) avoids the
crash.
