Bug Description

Strandely 'sudo lshw -c video' told nouveau is in use even if xserver-xorg-video-nouveau was not installed. With or without, HDMI does not work unlike with proprietary driver.

The actual driver is in the kernel, which in your case is ancient

If 5.0 doesn't work, file a bug upstream and hope for the best
