Проблемы с авторизацией в терминале без графической оболочки

Терминал (не в графической оболочке) запрашивает логин и пароль. После ввода логина, все этапы ввода пароля и повторного ввода логина автоматически пропускаются системой (как будто кто-то нажимает Enter вместо меня). Могу провести аналогию с С++: ситуация похожа на ту, когда в cin остается '\n', то есть дальнейшие вводы пропускаются.
Система: Ubuntu 18.10
