Fixed in hardy: mplayer 1.0~rc2 now uses libamr{n,w}b to support amr. I tested with a sample file and it works here.
I'll check for gutsy.

I tested with the amr sample available here: http://ftp.penguin.cz/pub/users/utx/amr/tests/ and it works (mplayer 1.0~rc1-0ubuntu13+medibuntu2).
Could you provide more tests samples?
Thanks.

But this looks like an upstream issue (rather than a packaging issue), so there's nothing we can really do.

confirming that in hardy I cannot play it too.

should I fill new bug for not playing sexy.amr
(note that it can be played through ffplay correctly)
or this bug should be reopened?

Reopening, but I don't know if the bug is in mplayer, libamr*, or if the file isn't correct...
