I too have serious errors with Skype under Ubuntu. I have been unable to
identify the exact issue but will continue with this today.

There isn't enough information in this bug report; it is not at all clear that
this is an Ubuntu bug, rather than a Skype problem. Unless specific information
is provided which identifies Ubuntu as the culprit, there isn't much to be done
with this report.

Skype uses /dev/dsp (which is oss) for sound. When you try to call someone, it
will complain that there's no audio device available (or something similar).
using "essdsp skype" from package esound-common does not work on breezy as for
jul 25. Completely disabling esd works, but no more sound events.

Perhaps something could be done on ubuntu part to leave /dev/dsp available for
those applications which use oss (I think skype is a crucial one). There are
several games which use it also.

There's already a bug somewhere about improving integration with third-party
apps which don't use esd, but I can't find it at the moment...

maybe you are thinking of bug 13910 that was marked fixed for Breezy?

Yes, that's the one I was thinking of. The solution doesn't help OSS
applications, though...

This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 13910.
