Symbol graphics doesn't show as highlighted when selected

When selecting a part of a schematic, only the pins and tracks will show as selected.
Please see attached image
also Im not sure if the unconnected markers should show as well.

Is left clicking in a symbol considered selection (as in pcbnew)?, In that case eeschema doesn't highlight symbols when selecting them with a single left click

Click will select in 6.0, but we need the "modern" toolset for that. 5.1 only has the "modern" canvas.

@Jeff Thanks for the clarification, I was assuming both things were the same (the canvas and the toolset).
