Bug Description

When locking the machine with alt-L the icon dock is still visible.

After Login, the dock does not get adjusted to the top menu.

In rare cases, the dock does not respond any more. This requires a reboot of the machine

I can confirm this
- except the freezing/non-responding on a fresh Ubuntu Installation.
I installed with 18.04 and upgraded to 18.10 afterwards.
The default dock (no dock extension in use) is visible and fully functional at the lock-screen.
The problem occurs not always, but - estimated - at over 50% of all lock-screens.

Full functional dock, e.g.:
- Execution of the Favorites/applications is possible
- Pre-view of application windows is possible

Same problem after upgrade from 18.04 to 18.10. However, the whole screen is visible when manually locking the screen (ctrl + alt + L in my case).

All programs are minimized when locking manually/or resuming from suspend and the screen goes slightly blurry, but not enough to distort text for instance. I.e., i can see everything. The exact same thing happens after suspend (lid closing/opening).

Also I can actually close programs by right clicking icons and access the dock menu as well as the top bar menu (e.g., se wifi info, click on settings panel etc).

Noticed that if i do ctrl + alt + L followed by a second ctrl + alt + L after a short wait period - then the correct lock screen appears.

I have lock enabled after 5 minutes and suspend. No auto login and no extensions at all enabled.

Btw, for me this happens 100% of all suspend/manual lock cases. Gnome has crashed once completely as well since upgrade due to this issue. In 18.04 the whole screen was visible sometimes for a very short period of time after lock, this is worse.

The activity menu remains operational. This leads to the situation that applications can be started, stopped and system tools be launched.

Workaround is to change the Dash to Dock setting "Customize opacity - Tune the dash background opacity" to "Fixed".

Hi @Plurto. Where is this setting and is it a default ubuntu setting? Thanks.

Note: Just using the default installation (had no active extensions before upgrade besides Ubuntu system defaults). I.e., have not installed dash to dock.

Just put this into terminal:

gsettings set org.gnome.shell.extensions.dash-to-dock transparency-mode FIXED

In 80% of the occurrences I can also see the whole desktop as I left it which is, apart from being a security risk, extremely irritating. (This is happening on the only computer that has a dual monitor setup.)

@Plurto your workaround was successful for my case as well. Thanks. Weird bug, transparency affecting clicks and interaction through a lock screen.

This should be considered high priority and a security risk. After locking the computer, it is still possible to launch applications without unlocking.
I cannot understand why it is taking so long to define the importance of this bug.

It gets better all the while.

Now the desktop shows completely (with open application windows). Interaction is not possible in the windows but the content can be seen.

Just to let others know:
@Plurto 's suggestion to set the dock transparency to FIXED (which makes the dock assume a static color) does not remedy the situation on my machines.

I tried with different transparency settings as well.

The issue still exists

The most common 18.10 stack trace I've seen people report is due to the transparency setting. However anything that triggers an exception in Dash to Dock when it is disabled on the lockscreen produces this issue so there are many possible causes.

Fresh 18.10 install, everything updated. Happens quite often, but not always (30% ?).

I have installed following extra extensions: Unite, Caffeine.
Nvidia Graphics driver is installed.

It looks exactly the same as in @korg's photos, including previews. Apps can be started by clicking.
I'm totally with @jleni's comment (#14), Imho, this is quite a huge security issue.
