Bug Description

When running the live CD iso from a USB stick on Lenovo X1 Carbon 6th, both the trackpad and trackpoint are unresponsive.

xinput reports what seems to be proper input devices:

⎡ Virtual core pointer id=2 [master pointer (3)]
⎜ ↳ Virtual core XTEST pointer id=4 [slave pointer (2)]
⎜ ↳ SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad id=11 [slave pointer (2)]
⎜ ↳ TPPS/2 Elan TrackPoint id=13 [slave pointer (2)]
⎣ Virtual core keyboard id=3 [master keyboard (2)]
↳ Virtual core XTEST keyboard id=5 [slave keyboard (3)]
    ↳ Power Button id=6 [slave keyboard (3)]
    ↳ Video Bus id=7 [slave keyboard (3)]
    ↳ Sleep Button id=8 [slave keyboard (3)]
    ↳ Integrated Camera: Integrated C id=9 [slave keyboard (3)]
↳ AT Translated Set 2 keyboard id=10 [slave keyboard (3)]
↳ ThinkPad Extra Buttons id=12 [slave keyboard (3)]

After some time of swiping my finger on the trackpad and trying to use the trackpoint, they sometimes start working. The xinput output is then slighly different:

⎡ Virtual core pointer id=2 [master pointer (3)]
⎜ ↳ Virtual core XTEST pointer id=4 [slave pointer (2)]
⎜ ↳ SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad id=11 [slave pointer (2)]
⎜ ↳ PS/2 Generic Mouse id=13 [slave pointer (2)]
⎣ Virtual core keyboard id=3 [master keyboard (2)]
↳ Virtual core XTEST keyboard id=5 [slave keyboard (3)]
    ↳ Power Button id=6 [slave keyboard (3)]
    ↳ Video Bus id=7 [slave keyboard (3)]
    ↳ Sleep Button id=8 [slave keyboard (3)]
    ↳ Integrated Camera: Integrated C id=9 [slave keyboard (3)]
↳ AT Translated Set 2 keyboard id=10 [slave keyboard (3)]
↳ ThinkPad Extra Buttons id=12 [slave keyboard (3)]

I will include the dmesg output in the comment. I will also see if trackpad and trackpoint survive a suspend (which is an issue in 18.04). I assume it's still an issue, even with 18.10's kernel.

Attached is dmesg output. It clearly indicates that the kernel tries to connect the device(s) a few times before it succeeds. Not ideal, but we can say it makes the distro installable if the user waits a few minutes for the reconnection.

After suspend (S3 suspend enabled in BIOS since BIOS v1.30), trackpad and trackpoint are dead again. After some swiping for a few minutes, trackpad is working again. Trackpoint remains dead (along with its physical buttons). I attach the dmesg gathered after suspend.

After suspend, xinput claims both devices are still there:

Issuing those two commands found on Arch wiki:

echo -n "none" | sudo tee /sys/bus/serio/devices/serio1/drvctl
echo -n "reconnect" | sudo tee /sys/bus/serio/devices/serio1/drvctl

Both devices work again. New dmesg output:
