There is a known issue in opensc 0.16 and 0.17 with CardOS SmartCards. This was fixed upstream with 0.18 and reported with other distros e.g. Suse: https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1100501

I added xenial repo and installed opensc-pkcs11=0.15.0-1ubuntu1 and opensc=0.15.0-1ubuntu1 as a workaround and put those packages on hold. Would be nice, if the fix was also available in Ubuntu.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, I am closing it because the bug has been fixed in the latest version of Ubuntu.

This is a significant bug in Ubuntu. If you need a fix for the bug in previous versions of Ubuntu, please perform as much as possible of the SRU Procedure [1] to bring the need to a developer's attention.
