By default devfsd is started in every runnlevel
which makes no sense. The only place where it
should be started is rcS.d .

The devfsd init script uses start-stop-daemon to be sure that only one copy is running, and so the extra links should do no damage. If this is causing any irregular behavior on any systems, please report the error in a comment.

I think devfsd is deprecated now, replaced by udev. So you should be using udev with Ubuntu 5.10. I would close this bug but I prefer having a second opinion.

Devfs is indeed deprecated in favor of udev, and many services start in multiple runlevels. This is perfectly normal for debian/ubuntu, where runlevels aren't handled like you may be used to from redhat/mandrake/fedora.
