Bug Description

Binary package hint: banshee

I am currently using Banshee Music Player version 0.13.1+dfsg-3 on Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon 7.10.

When playing a song in the program, I click ahead of where the slider indicates that the song is however the song does not advance but briefly pauses then continues to play.

I don't know whether this counts as a bug or as a feature request but the sliders in other music players such as Exaile, advance or return to any position clicked on the slider.

Thank you for your bug report and helping to make Ubuntu better.
Your report looks like a feature request. Please, check https://wiki.ubuntu.com/FeatureSpecifications if you are interested in drafting a blueprint for Banshee. Your suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I thinks this is a too small request to register a blueprint (feel free to tell me if I wrong).
I mark this as Wishlist that means this is a new feature request.

Maybe "Wishlist" sounds more accurate.

For future reference, what would qualify as a "Blueprint"?

Andrea, I think you're right about this being a small bug, but wouldn't "wishlist" be associated with new functionality, not a current bug?

TWO: Does this happen with every file? And can you test it in Totem, which also uses GStreamer for its audio playing?

I can confirm that this is also the case with Totem Movie Player 2.20.0 and GStreamer 0.10.14 and yes it happens with every file. Also as far as streaming internet media on Totem goes, clicking ahead stops the stream completely.

Surely this counts as a request for new functionality as the program doesn't behave in the way that I described?

I can't totally confirm TWO's report for Totem 2.20.0 and Gstreamer 0.10.14: clicking ahead of the slider, and keeping clicked, produces a sort of fast forward: it doesn't go on the position where you click, but playback goes fast ahead until you keep the mouse clicked, then playback starts again normally. If you just click, the slider moves for a while, then go back to the previous position.
Anyway, I confirm that it stops when reproducing internet streams.
IMHO, it is surely a feature request (wishlist importance), but it could cause troubles to people watching streaming media. Maybe we can switch importance to low.

What if you middle-click on a place ahead on the slider (in Banshee)?

I'm currently not using a mouse, but am I correct in believing that middle-click can also be achieved by pressing the 'crtl' button and then clicking? If this is the case then middle-clicking produces the same effect as standard clicking on the slider in Banshee.

With a mouse, ctrl + left click works just like left click. Right click moves the slider to the place you click.

Looking our findings so far, IMHO we can close this bug, since moving the slider far away from current position can be achivied with right-click. TWO: maybe you would like to file another bug with the problem of totem with streaming media.

I'll keep the bug as confirmed, waiting for your comments.

I don't seem able to achieve the same results as you, Andrea Colangelo. For the moment I am without a mouse, so am relying on my touchpad and it's buttons. I don't know whether this makes any difference- I don't think it should- but with my touchpad, clicking ahead of the slider with either the left click or right click button, double tapping the pad or doing the same with 'crtl' pressed down first, the song does not make the slider move to the place I click for me. It behaves in the same way as I described in that on clicking, a song momentarily freezes and then continues to play from the time at which it was before it is clicked. No matter how long I keep clicked down for ahead of the time indicator on the slider, the song doesn't fast forward for me.

I will have to try this out with a mouse to see if I can achieve the same effects as you.
