Bug Description

Ok, I re-edited now my submitted bug here.

Well, it seems the Hardy has some serious issues with - at least - my cd/dvd drive BENQ DVD DD DW1620. I couldn't get to boot the DesktopCD at all, it failed. Also the alternate install cd had some issues. Upon detecting the cd-drive I had to recheck it 3 times before it was actually recognised.

Once I setup the encrypted drive and stuff and tried to reboot, I just get this error message:

[ 59.xxxxxxx] hdc: drive not ready for command

(The same error message appears also when trying to boot from the DesktopCD)

This error message appears multiple time on the screen and then nothing works anymore. I don't even get as far as to provide the password for the encrypted drive.

However if I leave the drive unencrypted or if I unplug the cd/dvd drive I can boot Hardy.

The bug still persists in Hardy 4.

Actually I noticed now, that even in an unecnrypted install the cd/dvd drive isn't available once booted up.

So, a few new things... I did now install also alpha4 - the setup was fine with the alternate cd but after the boot it stopped at the cd-drive (had to ctrl-alt-del for continuing boot process)... because of a recommendation I did now dmesg after the boot and I got that:

Furthermore I have made a picutre of the error message that appears when using the desktop cd:

I'm running now 2.6.24-15-generic kernel and it works again. DVD drive is plugged in, system fully encrpyted... works fine.... I just noticed that harddisk labelling got changed again. Up to now it was hdX and sdY... now all is sdY again... in my crypttab I just changed from hdX to UUID - works prefectly.
