Bug Description

This page describes a feature not found in 18.04

https://help.ubuntu.com/stable/ubuntu-help/session-fingerprint.html.en

Starting from point 3. "Press on Disabled, next to Fingerprint Login to add a fingerprint for the selected account. If you are adding the fingerprint for a different user, you will first need to Unlock the panel." The option "Fingerprint Login" isn't available in the GUI (not displayed at all).

The following steps to enroll fingers are therefore missing as well.

Installing the package "fprintd" solves the issue.

sudo apt install fprintd

I suggest to add this in the documentation link above.

to correct myself, the required package is libpam-fprintd

i tried on Ubuntu 18.04.2 > "sudo apt install -y fprintd libpam-fprintd" and "sudo pam-auth-update" on my ThinkPad T400 (a bit old laptop) device info: Bus 004 Device 002: ID 08ff:2810 AuthenTec, Inc. AES2810 but it doesnt work. in Users>Settings when i try to enable and choose finger to enroll it gets freeze and causes fingerprint reader get extremely hot. i had to quit the setting when it happened and remove "fprintd" and "libpam-fprintd"

Note that the URL

https://help.ubuntu.com/stable/ubuntu-help/session-fingerprint.html

refers to the latest stable release (currently Ubuntu 19.04)

The URLs to the 18.04 docs is:

https://help.ubuntu.com/lts/ubuntu-help/session-fingerprint.html

or

https://help.ubuntu.com/18.04/ubuntu-help/session-fingerprint.html

Now that doesn't help; apparently the 18.04 docs is a bit insufficient for 18.04. However, it would be too much work to go back and change the 18.04 docs, so closing.

@Mustafa: If you have problems to make it work, it's probably a support matter or a bug against some other package, i.e. not a docs bug. You may want to ask a question at e.g. <https://askubuntu.com> to get help and find out.

affects: ubuntu-docs (Ubuntu) → gnome-user-docs (Ubuntu)
Changed in gnome-user-docs (Ubuntu):
