Bug Description

I have a brand new install of Ubuntu 18.04.1, and I get this error when trying to install octave using aptitude.

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 libosmesa6 : Depends: libglapi-mesa (= 18.0.0~rc5-1ubuntu1) but 18.0.5-0ubuntu0~18.04.1 is installed
The following actions will resolve these dependencies:

Keep the following packages at their current version:
1) libosmesa6 [Not Installed]
2) octave [Not Installed]

The suggested fix does not work. When I try with apt, I get:

~$ sudo apt install octave
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
octave : Depends: libosmesa6 (>= 10.2~) but it is not going to be installed
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Rob

Thanks for taking your time to report this issue and help making Ubuntu better.

When you mention that you have a brand new install, I wonder if that could be the case. Installing packages will try to fetch versions based on those listed in a local package list. So if there has been some updates in the mean time, or your package mirror was temporarily out of sync, you may get a mismatch such as this.

Luckily, these issues are often resolved when refreshing the package list (i.e. looking for updates). Could you please try running `sudo apt update` and/or installing updates, and see if the problem persits?

Also, when reporting bugs in the future please use apport by using 'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

Hi Hans,

I think I was incorrect when I thought I had a pristine install. I had
tried to install a number of packages using apt-clone, and I believe
they messed something up.  When I started from scratch again without the
apt-clone attempt, it works!

Thanks again!
