found this problem with 32-bit Lubuntu 18.04 (i386/i686), my 'lowriter' crashed
in strace there was SIGSEGV in some of spawned processes ('soffice.bin')
what helped me, was removing Java stuff ('apt remove openjdk-11-jre-headless' , then 'apt autoremove')
after that, 'lowriter' complained about missing JRE, but at least it started with working window as expected.
probably this bug should be attributed to OpenJDK packages as well.

I did not reproduce this problem under amd64 Ubuntu 18.04 so I would guess that it affects only 32-bit LibreOffice+OpenJDK11 (i386/i686). Probably because testing 32-bit packages is of lesser priority.

This is a known issue, see bug #1699772. It affects only 32-bits installations. A simple way of working around the issue would be to uninstall libreoffice-java-common. Or to simply run the following command in a terminal:

    sed -i '/enabled/c\<enabled xsi:nil="false">false<\/enabled>' ~/.config/libreoffice/4/user/config/javasettings_Linux_*.xml

Some functions of libreoffice won't work without Java (the most visible probably being libreoffice base), but most of the office suite should work just fine.
