Bug Description

fresh install of ubuntu 18.04.1 lts on a PC previously using 16.04 lts 32bits.
I chose options to make sure that I would not loose the content of /home directories.
I got an error message "sorry, grub could not be installed, your installation will not be able to start".

Thanks for your report.

Could you please provide more details about your system setup, disks layout and partitioning scheme and how you partitioned your disk with Ubiquity?

Thanks.

Hello

I'm not sure which level I can actually provide, so I reply my best

Starting point :

Only Ubuntu 16.04 lts 32 bits installed on system, all updates done the
day before.

PC : 500 GB HDD, 8 GB RAM, Intel® Core™ i3-2120 CPU @ 3.30GHz × 4

Partioning : Standard partition as per last install :

498 GB ext4 for system & data

1,8 Gb for swap

1.1 Mb unallocated

What I did :

- create Live USB with Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS

- follow this link (method 1)

https://doc.ubuntu-fr.org/reinstallation_ubuntu

and also this one

https://forum.ubuntu-fr.org/viewtopic.php?id=1668871

installation started, displayed some errors in the procedure, and
eventually replied that GRUB could not be installed

What I did this morning :

- from the same Live USB, I chose to install above "partly installed
18.04", with data erasing, and it did succeed.

Hope this helps. If not, just tell.

Regards

Nicolas Duvernois

Thanks for following up. You should have seen a warning message but it is really confusing and continuing as described in the forum thread leads to an installation failure of grub. This is reported in bug 1668148 and I'm marking this report as duplicate.

Do not hesitate to file any bug you may find.
