Default xine subtitle fonts are missing some encodings

The native xine fonts used for displaying subtitles are built using the procedure described here:

By default they only support the following encodings: iso-8859-1, iso-8859-2, iso-8859-5, iso-8859-9, iso-8859-15, windows-1250, windows-1251.
This means that languages that require other encodings (in my case iso-8859-7) do not show up correctly.

It is possible to use TTF instead of the native format, but:
a) As far as I know totem-xine as a frontend does not provide an option to enable this (In fact the GUI seems to ignore the options I give it and use Sans anyway).
b) In any case "[...] xine's native format [...] is better because the font generator utility implements more features than the 'on the fly' TTF renderer" (from the same page).

Following the instructions above I was able to get subtitles in my language to show up properly, but I think finding and following the above instructions may be too difficult for a new user.
