This happened both on Opera 9.25 and 9.50b1 for me. I installed the sun-java6-plugin package and it worked. Interestingly, it worked without this change if I ran opera from within an xterm. It did not work from the menu. Now, after adding the java packages from Sun, Opera works in both places.
