Boot stuck at ubuntu logo gnome display manager

Bug Description

Ubuntu 18.04 up to date @ 10/7/2018

Boot logo dots are stuck at the line:

Started Gnome display manager ppp link was shut down...

i have fixxed this temporary with:

TTY: sudo apt purge gdm gdm3
sudo apt install gdm3 ubuntu-desktop
systemctl restart gdm

then goes back to login, working normally again, till the next time this happens, cant reproduce

I had the same problem... but not able to recover following your instruction of reinstalling gdm and gdm3. I had to switch to lightdm and now running lightdm. Not able to switch back to gdm. I'm using a ATI Radeon Graphic Card.... not sure if that has any thing to do with the issue.

lotuspsychje, has the problem reoccurred? Or ever occurred more than once?

If it does then please try moving/removing /var/lib/gdm3/* and reboot (per bug 1779476).

@ #4 Daniel: yes the problem has occured 4 times, i now have reinstalled 18.04 clean
with all updates up to date @ 15/7/18 i will report back if this happens again..
