Icecat is a free firefox-derivate made by the GNU Free Software Foundation. In contrast to firefox it's totally free and also ships some more advanced security features than firefox. It would be very good imo if this could be implemented in the Ubuntu repositories. Also geobuntu would benefit a lot form it.

I definitely support this idea (to get IceCat available in gNewSense this way).

This would make the font rendering better for many pages and allows people to get a more advanced AdBlock Plus than Epiphany with Epiphany Extensions (which does not allow custom lists and does not block text ads).

Spell checking and all would be available again by just typing "sudo aptitude install icecat".

So please consider this, it might not be great for Ubuntu users, but would definitely be for the gNewSense community.

An Ubuntu package of IceCat would be a great contribution to the free software world, especially the gNewSense community. So I ask kindly: please make IceCat available in the Ubuntu repositories.

I definitely agree that GNU IceCat should at lease be in the repositories. I really like all the privacy features it has and that it does not recommend non-free software. It is based on Firefox which gives it a great base. I am not quite sure why Brian Murray is against it's inclusion in the repos for intrepid? Its a great program that has just as much if not more merit to be included than many of the other packages in the repos.

"Declined for Intrepid" doesn't mean it can't be included, it just means it is not release critical. Someone needs to package it first, then I'm sure it will be accepted for inclusion (although it's too late for Intrepid). See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuDevelopment/NewPackages

Another vote here for inclusion of Icecat. Even if isn't particularly interesting for Ubuntu users, for those who do understand free software, it may help on the path from ensnarement to freedom to have the best completely free software available with prepackaged proprietary drivers for hardware purchased before becoming free software aware.

I'm not sure how to deal with this...
I suppose if/once iceweasel is configured to use the gnuzilla plugin finder by default, and may also accept some other icecat privacy features, there will be little incentive to package icecat for debian. Yet for Ubuntu the issue persists.

How could a Firefox-based browser, that is not only free software but also respects the users freedom in it's behavior enter Ubuntu?
