I wonder if somehow the settings file has become owned by someone else (e.g. root).
I'm not sure which file contains the settings, but if you can run the command (in your home directory, as yourself) 'find . -user root' or 'find . -not -user $USER' (without the single quotes), you can check if this is the case.
