Screen backlight is wrong controlled on Macbook Pro (1G, 2G, 3G - Intrepid)

Bug Description

Whatever the Macbook Pro is running on AC power or on battery, gutsy always sets the screen backlight to a very low level after some inactivity time (watching a video for instance). Manually setting the backlight value to a correct one just fixes the issue until it is decreased again by the system.

Seems to occur on Macbook Pro 1G and 2G: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=3985139#post3985139

In my case, I'm running Gutsy Ubuntu + ATI fglrx 8.43 (november 2007).

The problems occurs with and without compiz fusion effects.

Did you check your settings in gnome-power-preferences? (Right click on the battery symbol, preferences)

Of course I checked the gnome-power-preferences. Please read the thread on the Ubuntu forum.

This is a severe bug apparently still present in Hardy.

IMHO, as long as MacBook Pros are not supported properly by Ubuntu 8.04.1 (nor by Ubuntu 8.10 Alphas), Ubuntu should give the user a warning during the installation process.

Screen brightness issue seems to be solved with Ubuntu 8.10 Alpha 4 64-Bit.

Testing here on Intrepid, the following occurs:

- When on AC power, brightness is at full power but cannot be regulated.
- When going to battery power, brightness is low (too low when the display is exposed to sunlight) and cannot be regulated.

I don't know who changed the title of my bug, but on 3G (Santa Rosa) there are some issues simply related to the pommed package and this is not related in any way with the wrong backlight control.

Romuald, thank you for reporting this bug to Ubuntu. Gutsy reached EOL on April 18th, 2009.
See this document for currently supported Ubuntu releases: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

Is this an issue in a supported release? If so, could you please execute the following command, as it will automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:
