Bug Description

trying to install Lubuntu SD drive (/dev/mmcblk3p1). This is the 2nd time install failed.
The internal solid state drive (/dev/mmcblk1) has 4 pre-installed partitions. The first partition is 100MB and labeled EFI System. The desktop version of Lubunto seems to work okay but I think that's because I added the file bootia32.efi into /EFI/BOOT. Before I added the efi file to that directory any attempt to boot lubuntu into desktop mode (try first) froze the system with no error message.

If I first start in desktop mode I can get the install onto the SD card to finish but it still doesn't boot into lubuntu (grub resets the system over and over). I suspect this is because the efi file. I will try to do that myself but I'm learning EFI shells on the fly.

If I'm right this issue is a result of the manufacturer intentionally running a 32 bit UEFI firmware to a 64 bit system to thwart linux installations.

It looks like the problem is either a bad sd card, or a bug in the kernel:

Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? Was there a prior kernel version where you were not having this particular problem?

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v4.17 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

in response to [Phillip Susi (psusi) who wrote: It looks like the problem is either a bad sd card, or a bug in the kernel]

I tried the install again, this time with a different SD card (same brand and type). The situation was a bit different because the first two times the SD card was not partitioned before the install but this time there already was an existing partition with data that I wanted to preserve. The third install attempt I requested that the existing partition be made smaller and a new partition be created with the remaining space for lubuntu. This also crashed install but with a different error. See attached screenshot showing the "Assertion failed" message.

Also - after the third failed install I was left in desktop / demo mode so I was able to run apport-collect. I may have actually run the apport-collect twice.

Joseph Salisbury asked if this was an attempted update or upgrade.
No, fresh install. This computer presently runs windows 10. I am attempting create a dual boot with an install onto the SD card of lubuntu 18.04 (via booting from USB).

Joseph Salisbury asked if I can try the latest upstream kernel.
I've not tried that yet but I will, Probably won't be today though.

Thanks to all.

Actually the instructions on installing upstream kernel didn't help me. One of the FAQs (at the very bottom): was "Can I install and then immediately use a kernel in a live environment?" and the response: "Given the amount of effort involved in doing this, it is easiest to use an installed OS to test the mainline kernel." I'd need to figure out how to install the upstream onto the Live Environment USB to test if this was fixed and the instructions do not cover that. The issue is installing Lubuntu, not using it after it was installed. Anyone have any advice on how to modify the instructions to install the upstream kernel onto the USB media?

It looks like the problem is either a bad sd card, or a bug in the kernel:

Phillip, you were right! I ran a program called F3 and learned that the SD card was "fake". It reported being 32 GB but only can store 16GB. I bought SD 2 cards at the same place so that is why the 2nd card gave the same error.

I resized the card using "f3fix", re-ran the install and it ran to completion.
