18.04 crashed on startup, hanging at purple login screen handoff to normal screen

Bug Description

Insanely, the boot before, and the boot after, were perfectly smooth and successful, and stayed on for hours. This single startup required a force restart after hanging on the purple that comes after typing password and hitting enter on login, and just before normal gnome desktop appears.

I'm not sure it's lightdm, but I read that lightdm still runs the login screen, and was responsible for previous problems at this stage in the bootup process.

Wow. Insane that it's for a mistyped password. That's a bizarre bug!

It's definitely what I experienced. For some reason, it was laggy, and only "caught" about half my password keystrokes, so when I pressed enter, it was an incorrect password. Then, I typed it correctly, and ran into the purple hang. Wow. I'm flabbergasted.

In some cases even typing your password correctly is also rejected -> bug 1765261
