Bug Description

Version: Ubuntu Budgie 18.04

After a fresh install, I noticed that when opting to install "Restricted Extras" from the "Getting Started -> Updates and Extras" tool that the Budgie Welcome application attempts to install two packages:

1. ubuntu-restricted-extras
2. ttf-mscorefonts-installer

I determined this by looking at the /var/log/apt/history.log

Start-Date: 2018-05-17 22:21:07
Commandline: apt install --allow-unauthenticated -y ubuntu-restricted-extras ttf-mscorefonts-installer-
Requested-By: robert (1000)
Install: unrar:amd64 (1:5.5.8-1, automatic), libavcodec-extra:amd64 (7:3.4.2-2, automatic), libvo-amrwbenc0:amd64 (0.1.3-1, automatic), libavcodec-extra57:amd64 (7:3.4.2-2, automatic), ubuntu-restricted-extras:amd64 (66)
Remove: libavcodec57:amd64 (7:3.4.2-2)
End-Date: 2018-05-17 22:21:10

I believe there might be a typo for the second package. It's recorded as "ttf-mscorefonts-installer-" in the history.log, when the actual package name is "ttf-mscorefonts-installer" (without the hyphen at the end). The end result after selecting this option from the Budgie Welcome application is that the MS ttf fonts are NOT installed.

To fix this, I manually install the MS ttf fonts by doing this:

sudo apt-get install ttf-mscorefonts-installer

And the MS ttf installed fine without any issues.

I think this bug report was a mistake. I realize now that the ubuntu-restricted-extras includes ttf-mscorefonts-installer by default. I believe that the syntax I thought was a bug:

apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras ttf-mscorefonts-installer-

Actually means "install the ubuntu-restricted-extras package but don't install the ttf-mscorefonts-installer package which would ordinarily be installed".

So I think it's safe to close this bug, although I'm not sure why the Ubuntu Budgie team would specifically include the MS core TTF fonts?

status: New → Invalid
Changed in ubiquity (Ubuntu):
