This is possible/cheap with the new approach in revision views, although it still seems a bit pointless to show the full contents of a file.

I think there's a lot of point in showing the full contents. At the least, it makes the revision page look more like the diff, which will surprise users less.

its important to see the "full" diff (which includes new and removed files) for doing reviews for merge requests for instance. Clicking on each new file is too inefficient and the new files are needed to get the big picture.

I agree.
We haven't addresses this due to performance issues.
We've worked it out, and once we get another bit of infrastructure ready, this will come soon after :)
