Bug Description

Hello,

I'm Iain Russell, maintainer of Metview. A user has reported that there are problems with the version of Metview available for Ubuntu 18.04, including the fact that the plotting does not work (this can be verified by starting Metview and going into the Getting Started folder and right-click/visualise the T_an+Tfc48 GRIB file).

But I think the main problem is that this is advertised as Metview 5.0.0-beta-1, but when you run it you can see that it is actually version 4.9.1 (Help/About). This version is not compatible with version 3 of the Magics plotting library, which is installed with it.

Metview 5.0.1 is available and should be used in preference to the beta version.

Please don't hesitate to get in touch with me if there are problems getting Metview 5 into Ubuntu. We plan to release version 5.1.0 towards the end of May.

Best regards,
Iain

Hello,
I downloaded metview 5.3 in Ubuntu 19. It is impossible to read the grib files:
The trace window disappears when you drag a file...
If someone would have a solution or an explanation

Hi Alex,

I'm interested in this. I don't yet have an Ubuntu 19 system, but can you confirm that the issue is only with plotting?

One quick thing to test is to write a new macro script like this:
  print('hello')
and confirm that it runs ok. This will at least let us know that some things are working.

If it's only a problem with plotting, then it's probably the same issue as was found before in the configuration of the version of Metview supplied with Ubuntu. There is always the possibility to build it from source if you have experience of this - the bundle is usually the easiest way.

We also have Metview available on conda. It's a bit experimental, but you can install it from the conda-forge channel if you're familiar with this environment.

Disclaimer: I'm the maintainer of Metview itself, but not of the Ubuntu package for it.

Thanks,
Iain
