Boot freezes with Gdm3

Bug Description

If the selected display manager is "LightDM" I am able to run the desktop, but if Gdm3 is the selected one, the loading freezes during the boot.

I can see this error in /var/log/syslog:

gnome-session-binary[1127]: CRITICAL: Unable to create a DBus proxy for GnomeScreensaver: Error calling StartServiceByName for org.gnome.ScreenSaver: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.Spawn.ChildExited: Process org.gnome.ScreenSaver exited with status 1

Also I guess this affects normal execution of applications like "SteamOS", as it exists with the error:

dbus[3704]: arguments to dbus_message_new_method_call() were incorrect, assertion "path != NULL" failed in file ../../../dbus/dbus-message.c line 1362.
This is normally a bug in some application using the D-Bus library.

  D-Bus not built with -rdynamic so unable to print a backtrace

If I log out and log in as a different user I get blank screen with mouse cursos visible and movable, but nothing else. If I log in as same user it works or if I boot I can log in with any user.
18.04 normal set up. I did install and purge gnome-session (to test "vanilla gnome").

As a fix I installed lightdm that works fine, but changing to gdm3 will always result into same problem.

Sorry, I am not able to give better technical information...

@Heikki try this:

sudo vi /etc/gdm3/custom.conf

and uncomment:

WaylandEnable=false

It worked for me

Also, if you are running Steam, just try this:

STEAM_RUNTIME_PREFER_HOST_LIBRARIES=0

from https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/5146

it fixes the issue

I have installed the following files:

linux-headers-4.17.0-041700rc3-generic_4.17.0-041700rc3.201804300800_amd64.deb
linux-image-unsigned-4.17.0-041700rc3-generic_4.17.0-041700rc3.201804300800_amd64.deb
linux-modules-4.17.0-041700rc3-generic_4.17.0-041700rc3.201804300800_amd64.deb

and rebooted it.

2 things I noticed:

1) I can see the boot screen while with the 4.15 I cannot (so I suppose it is better).
2) Steam doesn't start and keep on ask for 386 libraries (which I have installed but still returns the same error). However when I switch back to 4.15 it is working.

$ uname -a
Linux daniele-7870-3012A 4.15.0-20-generic #21-Ubuntu SMP Tue Apr 24 06:16:15 UTC 2018 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Not sure if consider it fixed or not
