I have ran windows 7, 10, ubuntu 16.04, linux mint and maybe others and i can't recall it doing this before. it is hp 450 g2 laptop. it is not a 2in1 tablet/laptop. i looked for info in forums but had no luck. i also checked in settings because i thought it may have had a tablet setting i could turn off.

There is a rotation lock button you can choose next to the power button in the Gnome system menu. Please try that.
