Bug Description

Hi!
This is not a bug, but a request of new implementation.
When Stellarium starts, the visualization follows what you set up (for example, initial direction, constellation lines, grids, available infos on selected items, atmosphere and so on) every time you change things and press the "Save Settings" in the "Configuration" tab (F2).
That's ok...

The fact is that I use Stellarium not only in order to see the sky online (planetary mode) with a certain configuration (for example no constellation lines, expecially during the day!), but very often I need to use it as a pure sky map, without atmosphere, ground, with grids on, with constellation boundaries and so on: what I have to do is to click a lot of buttons or keyboard letters in order to obtain what I want... but sometimes forgetting some options...

what I ask is the capability to save not only a "basic" configuration (the one active when I run the program) but a couple or more (identified by other "names"), thus having the ability to switch among them, without forgetting anything.

I know that this task could be accomplished by means of scripts, but that's sometimes difficult and requires a deep knowledge of the program and it's subtleties... not for faint heart people, but for programmers!

do you think it'd be possible?
Thanks a lot!

Forgot to say that this feature is present in other programs like Starry Night Pro Plus or Sky Map and I'd like to find also in my favorite program, Stellarium!

You can prepare your favorite settings, store config.ini, exit Stellarium, and copy config.ini under a new name myStarMapConfig.ini. Then start with stellarium --config-file myStarMapConfig.ini, or, write a couple of one-line-scripts for that if you have many configurations, like stell_starmap.sh, stell_plan.sh, stell_india.sh, stell_driveMyScope.sh or whatever.

hi!
that's a great idea, but the only disadvantage is that in windows is not so common to use command line switches!
these commands can be transformed into launch icons that hide command lines!
I think I'll create a lot of (other) Stellarium icons (like the other created during installation) !

but once again, having commands inside Stellarium could be completely satisfactory for a common user with few knowledge of the operating systems and programming...

thanks for your useful tips!!

Hi again!
I did as you suggested, creating a couple of links... Obviously they work very well !

but...

creation of a custom "ini" file is a pain in windows because the folder where they reside requires administrator permissions (easy for who knows about these things, very difficult to less skilled people)

then...
what happens to these custom files when
1) I update Stellarium to a NEW version? (I hope they are kept in place ...)
2) I uninstall Stellarium (for some reason) and I have to reinstall it again? (I imagine they are deleted!)

so I need to save these custom files somewhere ...

but again...
when Stellarium is updated, these custom files are "old", just because they refer to parameters related to an old version and obviously do not contain any NEW parameter of the upgraded version... :(

I think that now the con's are more and more delicate than the pro's...
so...
If Stellarium could handle these custom configuration files, everyone could be happy and free from headache...

what do you think about my considerations?

Thanks a lot!

The config.ini format has been reasonably stable for the last 5 years or so that simple updates should not break everything. And deinstallation should not delete config_<variant>.ini files unless directed to delete everything including user data.

I think some settings cannot simply be reloaded after startup. It would take some effort to change that. Now you must balance benefit for one user against cost for voluntary development.

https://answers.launchpad.net/stellarium/+faq/2913

I don't require this feature and can live without it. But everybody else can of course invest personal time and implement what you describe: "Store config as..." and "Load config...", probably also load "delta configs" (to allow standard config.ini plus small changes like 6 other settings?) from inside the GUI. (You would have to think about creating those deltas, how to find the difference between last stored config and current config to identify those "6 last changes" etc.) This will become stupidly complex for almost no real benefit, as "Delta configs" can be programmed as scripts today, and this can be learned if you really need it.
