Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox

WISH LIST: When I drag a link to another tab I wish the cursor would be in the page, not the address bar. Rarely the cursor will be in a text box on the page. When I press Page Up or Page Down the results are not what I expected. Very annoying.

ProblemType: Bug
Architecture: i386
Date: Sat Dec 15 12:02:18 2007
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 7.10
Package: firefox 2.0.0.11+2nobinonly-0ubuntu0.7.10
PackageArchitecture: i386
SourcePackage: firefox
Uname: Linux vern-desktop 2.6.22-14-generic #1 SMP Sun Oct 14 23:05:12 GMT 2007 i686 GNU/Linux

----------------------------------------
Steps to reproduce:

Find a link on a webpage
Drag it to open a new tab

Expected:

Firefox focuses the keyboard cursor, and therefore the Page Up/Down keys on the webpage itself so the webpage scrolling can be controlled by keyboard

Actual:

Firefox keeps the keyboard cursor in the address bar

Hi,

firefox extensions are the cause for the majority of bugs reported against firefox.

To check that the bug you are seeing is actually a firefox one (and not an extension one), please disable your extensions one-by-one (restart firefox in between) until there is either no enabled extension left or your problem is resolved.

Please report your findings back.

Thanks,
 - Alexander

I have disabled all my add-ons and the behavior is exactly the same. The cursor always goes to the address window, and hitting Page Down makes the url go away.

I have figured out that the cursor goes to a text box when the web page is programmed to do that. It seemed erratic because not all pages are programmed that way.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

I have upgraded to version 8.04 and the behavior is still the same.

OK, I'm don't entirely understand what you are doing to produce the problem - "When I drag a link to another cursor I wish the cursor would be in the page". You have multiple cursors? Please elaborate, and provide a screenshot if possible.
Can you also provide examples for some websites that you are getting this behavior on, please outline the exact process for reproducing this problem, with a specific example or two.
Thank you.

Sorry, it should have said "When I drag a link to another tab."

Just drag any link to a different tab. After the page loads, hit Page Up or Page Down. The page does not move because the cursor is in the address bar. I have to click somewhere on the page before I can scroll it.

OK, thanks for clarifying that. Can you please provide some examples of when the cursor does nothing, and then some examples of when the cursor moves inside a text box on the page? Unless I am misunderstanding you again, it sounds like the behavior is not always the same, depending on the page(s) involved. That could be a bug, but if the cursor always does the same thing, then your request really would be a Wishlist request.

I thought I was pretty explicit about the "wishlist" part, it being the first word of my post. It's certainly not a bug. Is there another forum for wishlist items?

I saw your WISH LIST in the description, but I'm trying to understand exactly what it is what you want! And yes, this is the place to apply for wishlist items, but I have to know exactly what it is that you are requesting, so I need examples in order to confirm the behavior that you see. Examples allow us to reproduce behavior, then developers can act on it to see that the new behavior is in line with what you are asking. Note that I am unclear as to if behavior is differing from page to page.
You said "Rarely the cursor will be in a text box on the page." - when does it do this (on what pages)? When does it not? Is this behavior erratic?

Please provide examples of webpages which you see this behavior on, then I can mark this bug for Wishlist. Thank you in advance.

This happens on every site where I drag a link from one tab to another. If the site has a text entry, such as a search option or login name, then the cursor appears in the text entry box. I assume the page is programmed to put it there by default. Otherwise the cursor is not visible, but if I press Page Up or Page Down the address bar scrolls and the url disappears. I have to click somewhere in the page before the scroll keys will scroll the page.

I'm sorry I'm having so much trouble identifying the behavior. I hope it's clear now.

Does anyone still see a problem related to the one that was reported using currently supported versions of Ubuntu and Firefox? Please let us know if you do otherwise this report can be left to expire in approximately 60 days time.
