Bug Description

XUbuntu 18.04. Solaar functionality is available from the tray. However, the Solaar icon is not visible. The tray has a blank square where the icon should be. Hovering the mouse pointer over the blank square displays the "Solaar" tooltip. Clicking on the (blank) square displays the Solaar menu and Solaar functionality is available via that menu.

Same here. Might this perhaps be due to GTK3? Just asking...

Me too / XFCE. A dirty workaround I just discovered is to make Solaar a favorite in Whisker Menu, then "add it to Panel".

The icon that is missing for me is acyaually in the Panel's Notifier Plugin. I hid the Solaar icon there and the blank space where the Solaar icon would normally show goes away.

The "dirty workaround" obviously only addresses some appearance issues, not the coding that should place the icon in the notifier menu.

Changed in solaar (Debian):

Confirming no icon in sys tray on upgrade from Mint 19.3 to 20. Blank space where icon should be and the solaar menu when that space is left clicked.

I confirm that there is no standard solaar icon on the panel.
I'm running LinuxMint 19.3 / cinnamon

Same here Ubuntu 20.04 / Budgie.

Initial "green gear" icon shows up fine. It's only one a device is activated that it becomes an empty square.

Interestingly it worked fine for me in 18.10 / Gnome3

Problem confirmed on Linux Mint 20 Ulyana (Cinnamon) after upgrading from Mint 19.3 (Cinnamon). Same thing, missing icon, can click on it and see the Solaar menu.

Not sure if it's relevant but my panel is Vertical, along the left side. Not sure if the issue exists if my panel were Horizontal along the bottom.
