Bug Description

After installing the nvidia drivers and performing a system upgrade, the system no logger boots to a graphical interface, all that I get is a black screen. This happens on multiple units but only laptops with hybrid graphics. This issue does not occur under vanilla Ubuntu.

I did notice that everything works fine without performing a 'apt upgrade' and the system only breaks when the ubuntu-drivers-common package is upgraded from 1:0.5 to 1:0.5.1.

Steps to reproduce:

  Install the Ubuntu MATE BETA 2 ISO, not connected to the internet and then run the following commands.

  $ sudo apt update
  $ sudo apt upgrade
  $ sudo apt install nvidia-driver-390 nvidia-prime
  $ reboot
