Bug Description
It happens to me today that Shade was selected, but after restart Deere was shown.
There are assumptions that it happens when the selected sound-card is occupied by an other application.

I didn't want to reply in the Dark Metal thread and take it more off topic.
I don't think the above bug seems to quite fit with the one I experienced (the forum post you link to.) When I was using Dark Metal (I'm happy enough with the new bundled ones, well a slightly modified one anyway, so haven't used it for a while now) it would lose some of the specific skin preferences (colour scheme and visible components) but it would always load the correct interface gui. It would also sometimes do this when switching gui, not only at program load.
I use Linux with Jack and so the audio interface can not be tied up by another application. It did not coincide with having to redeclare the audio settings, like has to be done a large percentage of the time due to the Port Audio implementation, but seemed to be more random.
I've not as yet experienced any issues using the official skins.
