Bug Description

AMD AthlonXP1800+
512M DDR
8.6Gig EIDE as hdc on IDE2 (secondary Master)
Hoary 5.04 install ISO burned to CDR

Goes through the whole installation and at first boot I get:

GRUB Loading stage1.5.

GRUB loading, please wait...
Error 2

Then the system hangs at the same place on any reboot try.
This machine boots fine when using a 5.04 Live CD.

Could you try with dapper flight-2 and see if you still get this error?

I tried loading LILO instead of GRUB and now I get lines of "99" across the screen when I boot up. Weird! Any ideas on how to make the OS boot up correctly? Do I have to go through the whole process of installation again?

Could you try this with Ubuntu 6.06 LTS and assess whether the bug persists?

I've been running ubuntu for some time, and just recently got the error 18 at bootup. Changed the LBA setting in the bios, and now getting "error 2". Anyone know what error 2 actually is?

hope that helps a bit. If it turns out to be a dying hard drive try looking
into a program called Hard Drive Mechanic. I've used it to restore life to
some pretty dead hard drives and they've been working perfectly ever since
too. I might even have that program sitting around somewhere if you need it.

lol... The saga continued, but I managed to put another drive in, reinstall
the older kernel complete, and with the old drive running as slave was able
to boot the recovery mode from the new grub shell. Probably a clumsy way to
do it, but got back up and running. (Wonder why it went down... wasn't a new
install, so getting the "error 18" message was a little strange)

Thanks heaps,
Dave

Regarding my problematic situation. I don't recall how I eventually got around the problem, but I did not have to replace a hard drive. I am still using the same drives. I was just reviewing my old bug reports and wanted to update.
