apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade should do the trick

Hmm. Running a system update is what caused the error in the first place.

It looks like you will also need the fix for bug 1760876.

running update again (apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade) through terminal seems to have fixed it, or, there were no errors I noticed in the output, anyway.

There is some bug, I think.

After the last kernel update (4.15.0-29-lowlatency #31~16.04), I encountered this error. To resolve it, I needed to `apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade` *and* it was necessary to disable UEFI secure boot or the vboxdrv module would not launch.

The bug is not resolved, in that a kernel update to this version is not clean and trouble-free.

*** Dialog upon launching virtualbox

Kernel driver not installed (rc=-1908)

The VirtualBox Linux kernel driver (vboxdrv) is either not loaded or there is a permission problem with /dev/vboxdrv. Please reinstall virtualbox-dkms package and load the kernel module by executing

'modprobe vboxdrv'

as root.

where: suplibOsInit what: 3 VERR_VM_DRIVER_NOT_INSTALLED (-1908) - The support driver is not installed. On linux, open returned ENOENT.
