Bug Description

Audio doesn't work on every kernel I tried. I also used this https://github.com/plbossart/UCM, but this results in a pulseaudio crash. See this for more information: https://github.com/plbossart/UCM/issues/27

This sounds like it might be a duplicate of bug 1720519. Please try the workaround in comment 4 here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/1720519/comments/4

I tried that workaround, but it didn't work. I also purged and reinstalled pulseaudio, still nothing.

Interestingly, even though pulseaudio doesn't start and no sound indicator appears on the system, if I start something using VLC, the audio works. No sound in the browser or system, only in VLC. I guess this is due to some bugs in pulseaudio, isn't it?

If pulseaudio isn't running then that's the main issue. It's hard to declare a bug is in a program when that program isn't even running yet.

Please try:

1. Run 'journalctl -b > journal.txt' and attach the resulting file here.

2. Run 'pulseaudio -vv' and paste the output here.

I managed to get it to work.
Here is how:

copy these files as instructed in the README: https://github.com/plbossart/UCM/tree/master/bytcr-rt5640

Then, from the terminal:
pacmd set-source-port alsa_input.platform-bytcr_rt5640.HiFi__hw_bytcrrt5640__source
pacmd set-default-sink alsa_output.platform-bytcr_rt5640.HiFi__hw_bytcrrt5640__sink

Interesting. That sounds like something we should be shipping with Ubuntu. But ideally it should come from upstream PulseAudio.

Please log a bug for the issue with the PulseAudio people so we can try and get the fix in a future version:

  https://bugs.freedesktop.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=PulseAudio

and then tell us the ID of that new bug.
