Bug Description

Binary package hint: mozilla-thunderbird

I have installed Thunderbird on a Gutsy system and have then placed a Firefox shortcut and a Thunderbird shortcut on the desktop (using Applications -> Internet -> rightclick on Thunderbird -> Add Starter to Desktop). The shortcuts work nicely, but the TB icon is noticably bigger than the FF icon.

The .desktop files specify thunderbird.png and firefox.png, respectively, as icons. For each of these files names, there exists just one file on the system (/usr/share/pixmaps/thunderbird.png and /usr/share/pixmaps/firefox.png), and they have different dimensions:

$ file -L /usr/share/pixmaps/thunderbird.png
/usr/share/pixmaps/thunderbird.png: PNG image data, 64 x 64, 8-bit/color RGBA, non-interlaced

$ file -L /usr/share/pixmaps/firefox.png
/usr/share/pixmaps/firefox.png: PNG image data, 48 x 48, 8-bit/color RGBA, non-interlaced

Not sure which one is the "correct" size; but I would appreciate if both icons would have the same size. Currently the first thing the user of this machine (which will not be me) will see are these two differently-sized icons, and it looks just wrong :-)

Here's a screenshot of the FF and TB desktop icons. I have put some other icons there for reference (the tiny icons for Evolution and Rhytmbox are yet different bugs, it seems).

As a workaround, there's a 48x48 TB icon at /usr/share/thunderbird/icons/default.xpm ; after editing the thunderbird.desktop file on the desktop, it looks much more consistent.

Maybe you could put the 48 pixel icon to /usr/share/pixmaps/thunderbird.png in the future, instead of the 64 pixel one?

Just wanted to test this, but at the moment the desktop launchers for Firefox or Thunderbird have no sane icon at all - see attached picture. This is on a fresh install of Hardy Alpha 5. Thunderbird 2.0.0.9+nobinonly-0ubuntu2 was freshly installed as well.

Oliver Gerlich : Thanks for your comment and testing. This problem is bug 194970 (because Firefox and Thunderbird does not have desktop files that pass the desktop-file-validate test) I already provided patches to Asac so he will be able to fix this very quickly. If you want to see the icons appear, just drop the Desktop file of Thunderbird and Firefox on a text editor like gedit and remove ".png" in the "Icon=thunderbird.png" line, save the file and the icon will appear.
