Bug Description

hexchat is a gtk+2.0 application.

Since we are attempting to deprecate gtk+2.0 applications, we should probably remove hexchat from Ubuntu.

While there is a bug to track the gtk3 port, there doesn't seem to be much progress:

https://github.com/hexchat/hexchat/issues/2047

Users would be better off using an alternative like xchat-gnome which is gtk3 and is natively supported in Wayland.

It integrates with gnome-shell very poorly, it lacks showing the message notifications correctly, whenever one receives multiple pings - they are all cleared from the message notification pull down, upon opening just one of them.

It is not usable on the default ubuntu desktop; with the set of minimal integration one would expect.

That is just a GNOME-Shell problem. The application makes a notification for each of them and doesn't clear them the shell does.

You might want to file bugs for the other packages too:

# apt-cache rdepends libgtk2.0 | wc -l
1390

xchat-gnome which is totally unmaintained, and removed from ubuntu twice and the last RM bug mentions "xchat-gnome also never actually supported a gtk3 release. This package was a git snapshot of the mid-transition to gtk3. It was half finished and very broken. This package has multiple thousand line patches to try and just get it working. The project is very dead, this is an Ubuntu fork".

Where did you even find this as a viable alternative…

Notifications work right in polari, i can have two highlights, clicking one, jumps to the right channel. One can switch to a different window, open notifications drawer again, and click the other one, and just to it correctly.

The theming is a bit odd in polari, but it least I should try to fix the notifcations for hexchat.

I don't think we're systematically attempting to remove every gtk+2.0-using application from Ubuntu at this point.

I'm going to Won't Fix this bug - if you wish to insist then the Tech Board is probably an appropriate forum to set some kind of policy.

Changed in hexchat (Ubuntu):
status: New → Won't Fix

Polari uses the org.gtk.Notifications interface. Most applications including xchat-gnome and hexchat use the org.freedesktop.Notifications interface. How gnome-shell treats the latter is different.
