once the effect is selected the name display is fine in the field showing the effect name

I cannot reproduce this. I think it is a macOS-specific bug.

I can confirm this with Ubuntu Trusty at 100 % and German texts.
"Grafi...er E" instead of "Grafischer EQ"
In the glosed Box it is still cutted but not elided "Grafischer E"

I just pulled the updated translation texts into the 2.1 branch.
Among other changes, ``Grafischer EQ`` was changed to ``Grafik EQ``.

But I finally found a solution without the tickmark that is also stable when scaling the skin.
PR coming soon.

WEffectSelector is a mystery anyway: the effect list (WEffectSelector QAbstractItemView) is wider than the closed effect selector although width was removed from qss. Not to mention the combinations in qss that are necessary to achieve hover effect etc.
