Bug Description

When Ubuntu boots Grub shows the purple small characters based screen is drawn very slowly from top to bottom almost line by line. After that the Grub menu writes over it in black and white characters. This started to happen just recently. Keyboard selection of which item to boot is sluggish.
After boot, everything is fine.

Also, Ubuntu does lock up often. Sometimes at the boot screen or when idle after login. and sometimes after several hours using lots of applications. Integrated IGP, (intel on board grpahics disabled) so it's not using Wayland suppose. Everything updated with apt-get install upgrade/update.

Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? Was there a prior kernel version where you were not having this particular problem?

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v4.16 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Just did some apt-get updates and upgrades and on the version now as below and the issues disappeared.
The Grub screen is back to normal now with the small font. Issue can be closed.
