Bug Description

After recent updates that fixed the bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1742675 on my computer the following different bug has appeared. Playing Youtube music videos (static picture + music, length 40-70 minutes) in Firefox (as background for other activities on computer) causes sometimes (rather often, up to several times per day) freezing of the system. And only restart through reset button can help.

Initially I though that it is related to different Javascript-related tasks (manipulating with complex widgets in Chromium, running heavy gulp tasks through yarn) but it looks they are not the reason (or at least not the main reason). Because right now I have seen the problem when keyboard/mouse was not touched at all.

That's why I think this information is rather enough; and I decided to post this bug.

Without running Youtube and js-related tasks it is possible to use the system all day. But with Youtube and js tasks freezing occurs every 1-3 hrs.

Right now the system freezed on opening complex js widget in Chromium with opened debugger.
No Firefox and no Youtube were opened.

So, it looks freezing occurs mainly on any kind of operations requiring relatively heavy processor work.

Editing text files, browsing texts/images online, checking mail in Thunderbird may be done for hours without any problems.

Not sure whether this additional info can help but adding it: freezing does not occur immediately for the whole system; initially only one app freezes (any app); but within 1 minute the whole system freezes too.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v4.16 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

It will take from me several days to find some free time to understand how to test kernels safely on working machine. After that it will take up to several days to be sure that bug is resolved by such fix. So, you should expect from me report by the next Monday or so.

I still did not what you asked; but after recent standard update the situation has slightly improved. The system crashes once per day but not once per hour. (At least it was so during recent several days.)
As I remember, it is somewhat worse than it was much earlier (when it crashed once per several days) but much more better than recently.

More notes will be given in a week.

I still did not what you asked; but bug has appeared again.
It looks it is strictly related to memory consumption by Java because it appears hourly (or so) when large projects are opened in Phpstorm. But with a smaller project all is stable for day (or so).

Also it may be related to Symfony plugin; because the larger project is based on Symfony but a smaller one is based on Yii.

You may close this bug. The problem does not relate to Ubuntu directly.
It was the issue of indexing in Phpstorm for symlinked folders and folders with cached temporary data.
Also it partially related to amount of memory dedicated to JVM.
