2. observe the launcher icon now has a single white arrow on its left.
3. open another window of the same application (e.g. by right-clicking on the launcher icon and chosing "New ...")
4. observe the launcher icon now has two white arrows on its left.
5. click the launcher icon.
6. see your whole Unity session instantly die.

What should happen:
Unity should display an overview of the application's open windows

Could not reproduce this. Can you try with live iso from bionic? It may be some graphics/mesa update causing this issue.

Interesting. It crashes reproducibly with my install. I'll try a live install and report back.

I confirm I cannot reproduce this in a live install. It seems to be a problem of my account -- any ideas what might cause it?

It does not happen with a newly created user account. There must be something about my account that interacts badly with Unity :-(.
